Hey, this is Justin Prince.
How many of you are an entrepreneur, you’re a leader, you’re a sales professional, and it’s a lot harder than you thought?
In the road to success, there’s a price to be paid, there’s a toll that you have to pay. Just know going in, you’re going to pay the price, and one of the prices you’re going to pay is the price of time and of effort. You have to pay the price [00:00:30] of time and effort.
Here’s what I’ll share with you. If I would’ve known going in as an entrepreneur at age 25 how hard it was going to be, and how long it was going to take, and how much more challenging it was going to be, I wouldn’t have done it. What I mean by that is, I just wouldn’t have the perception. I thought I’d be making $10,000 a month in three months and it would be easy. Someone else did it, so I can do it. It was harder than I thought, it took longer than I thought, and I wouldn’t have done it.
Now, here’s what I want to share with you. Make sure you hear this next part. Looking back now, and I’ve paid the price [00:01:00] and I continue to pay the price, but it … Now, looking back now, I would pay the price over and over and over again. In other words, I didn’t have the context or the perspective looking forward. Steve Jobs in his famous speech at Stanford said, “You cannot connect the dots and be, like, looking forward. You can only connect the dots when you’re, like, looking back.” So, you look back and you say, “I wouldn’t do that again,” but I couldn’t connect those dots [inaudible 00:01:24]. It was too hard. If you’ve been told [inaudible 00:01:26] the full price I had to pay, I would’ve been like, “Man, I want to find something easier than this.” [00:01:30] But I’m telling you it’s worth it to pay the price. It’s worth it to make it through the grind and the struggle.
Let me share with you three insights that are going to help you to pay the price of time and effort. Number one, address the prices issue upfront. You might as well know they’re the price of time and effort, so when you define your dream, you have to make a commitment equal to or commensurate to the size of your dream. If your dream is a 10 and your commitment is a three, the gap between three to 10 will be where all your failure [00:02:00] lies. It will be where all of your disappointment, your anxiety, your stress, your angst lies in the gap. What I’m sharing with you is this, you can [inaudible 00:02:08] goal. That’s great. But make sure you have a 10 for a commitment. Address this price issue upfront before you start, that, no, I’m going to have to pay the price and that the struggle is equal to the size of the dream, that the commitment is equal to the size of the dream.
Number two is go through hell. You go, “What? What are we talking about here?” Here’s what I want to share with you. I had a friend of mine who is a multiple [00:02:30] times New York Times bestselling author, he’s on Fox News and CNN all the time. Unique guy, and he was speaking [inaudible 00:02:35] all over the world [inaudible 00:02:36] he says, is that you have to go through hell to become successful and my friend said, defending it, he goes, “Yeah, you’re right. You do. [inaudible 00:02:45] You got to go through hell to become successful.”
I’m going to tell you the same thing. It’s hard. You got to go through hell, okay? He said, “But guess what, you have to go through hell to fail, too.” So my friend’s insight was if you’re going to go through hell anyway, you might as well get something from it. Winston Churchill on the darkest [00:03:00] days of World War II said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” Pretty good insight. The point is, guys, it’s not easy. It’s hard. You have to go through hell. Remember you have to go through hell to fail, so if you have to go through hell either way, then go get something for it. Go become successful. Chase your dreams. Pay the price of putting in the time. Pay the price of putting in the effort. You can’t cheat the time and you can’t cheat the effort.
Now, you can put in more time and collapse the effort, but you still have to put in the effort. Or you can put in [00:03:30] less effort. It would just take more time, but either way, you have to pay the price of time and pay the price of effort.
The last thing I want to share with you is to remember this. The greatest price that you’ll ever pay is to not pay the price, so I’m going to encourage you to pay the price of time and effort. Remember this, guys, your dreams, your goals, they’re important. Your pursuing them is worth it, and your accomplishing them is necessary.
Hi Justin,
You are so good at stressing the importance of paying the price! Love your elaboration about matching the time and efforts with the desired outcome too! Most people want to be successful but not everyone who wants to be successful are willing to pay the price!
Love your point about longer time if less effort is put in! So true!
Thank you for your insights and wisdom, particularly about ‘going to hell’ part!
